Stephen Mizell is the Lead Pastor at Open Door Church. Stephen and his wife Barbara, started attending Open Door on Easter Sunday 2005. In January of 2008 he came on staff and became the Lead Pastor in October, 2010. Stephen has a call to impact northeastern North Carolina with life-giving congregations in rural communities. Sharing practical truths from God’s word every Sunday with Open Door is just one way he accomplishes this. He is committed to raising up leaders both locally and around the world through the John Maxwell’s organization EQUIP and the John Maxwell Team by teaching leadership principles in many countries around the world.
Stephen is also an entrepreneur and has owned several businesses over the last 20 years. He and Barbara have four children and three grandchildren. Campus Pastor, Bertie
Jay Rivenbark serves as Campus Pastor at our Bertie County location. He is a long time member of Open Door Church and has served in various capacities including Administrative Pastor, Elder and Deacon. He retired in 2011 as a North Carolina Wildlife enforcement officer, and enjoys hunting, fishing and playing golf. He and his wife Sonia have two grown children and two grandchildren living in the area. His desire to see Bertie County reached with the Gospel through the loving, learning and leading emphasis of the church.
Ryan grew up in church and knew from a very early age he wanted to become a pastor. He has a passion to serve and lead families toward Christ both inside and outside the church. Ryan graduated from Lee University with a degree in Youth Ministry. He and his wife Ashley moved to Edenton in 2012 to serve as student pastors. Since that time his role has expanded to lead our entire family ministry (birth-12th grade). They welcomed their first child Mattox in 2015 and another daughter, Henley in 2017. They love serving and being a part of Open Door Church which has become like family while away from family.
As Media Pastor, Alyssa has a heart to tell stories of redemption, hope and love, as well as helping others be able to tell their own stories. With a degree in filmmaking and biblical studies from Evangel University, she also has a background in marketing and broadcasting. From starting an art gallery to managing marketing at a Chick-fil-A restaurant and directing the local news – the various experiences have all worked together to help manage all things media and video at Open Door. Alyssa and her husband Tyler welcomed their first child, Judah into their family in 2015.
Worship Leader, Bertie
Jennifer serves as Worship leader for Open Door Bertie campus. She has a passion to see People enter freely and fully into Worship. Before moving to North Carolina, Jennifer worked with a ministry out of Dallas Texas for four years, traveling across the country leading people into worship. Jennifer resides in Windsor with her husband, Travis, and their three children Wade, Kyle, and Kadence.
Wendy serves as the Business Administrator for Open Door Church. She provides direction for financial and operational functions, and oversees finance, accounting, human resources and project management. She has a BS in Mathematics from ECU and was a math teacher for grades 6-12 for ten years, as an assistant principal before coming to the church. Wendy is dedicated to making sure the church operates with excellence as it is a reflection of Christ. She, her husband Todd and their two children have been a part of Open Door since the fall of 2009
Tyler serves as assistant to Stephen Mizell. Tyler first came to Open Door Church when his wife, Alyssa Bream, accepted the position of Media Pastor. Tyler is pursuing his Masters degree in Theology in preparation for PhD work in theological anthropology. Tyler has come on staff at Open Door Church to help assist Pastor Stephen in his work, help craft sermon series, aid in digital management as well as oversee life groups.
Elders are responsible for protecting the integrity of the church from doctrine to finances. With monthly meetings, they manage the budget, conduct interviews for new staff and make sure the church remains in a healthy place.
