What Is Celebrate Recovery About?
In Galatians 5:1 we are taught that Christ has set us free to stay free. Celebrate Recovery is a Christian recovery group that enables us to learn and experience the freedom we have in Christ. Celebrate Recovery is a safe place where a person can come and learn to be real. A place where they can let down their masks and learn that they are not hopeless in their struggles; that there is someone who cares and can set them free.
Celebrate Recovery is a spiritual growth program designed to help people live a free life in Jesus Christ. It is designed to help broken and hurting people overcome life’s struggles and discover freedom and healing from hurts, habits and hang ups. Celebrate Recovery is for anyone who wants to discover true freedom and experience genuine joy and purpose in life. Some recovery programs deal only with alcohol or drugs or other similar problems, but Celebrate Recovery is a “large umbrella” program under which a limitless number of issues can be addressed.
A Hurt, habit or hang-up is something that hinders our walk with God. The feeling of being HURT is an emotional reaction to another person’s behavior or to a disturbing situation (abuse, abandonment, codependency, divorce, relationship issues, etc.).
A HABIT is an addiction to someone or something (alcohol, drugs, food, gambling, sex, shopping, smoking, etc.). HANG-UPS are negative mental attitudes that are used to cope with people or adversity (anger, depression, fear, unforgiveness, etc.).
In Romans 7:24 Paul asked the question “Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?” He didn’t ask what would deliver him but rather who would deliver him. Many recovery groups believe it is important to have a higher power that helps them recover. One of the things that makes Celebrate Recovery unique is that it recognizes there is only one true higher power – Jesus Christ and that an ever-growing relationship with him is what enables us to experience the freedom from hurts, habits and hang ups.
Celebrate Recovery is a Bible-based program. In John 8:31-32 Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” The opposite of this is also true. A lie will keep us bound. That is why it so important to learn the truth. When we know the truth, we can still be lied to but not easily deceived. We believe that the more our lives line up with what the Bible says, the greater freedom we will experience.
Celebrate Recovery is a forward-looking program focused on learning how to forget what is behind and striving toward what is ahead ( Philippians 3:13). Rather than wallowing in the past, or dredging up and rehearsing painful memories over and over, Celebrate Recovery focuses on the future. Regardless of what has already happened, the solution is to start making wise choices now and depend on Christ’s power to help us make those changes.
Celebrate Recovery emphasizes personal responsibility. Instead of playing the “accuse and excuse” game, this program helps people face up to their own poor choices and work through what they have the power to change. We cannot control everything that happens to us, but we can control how we respond. That is one of the secrets of happiness. When we stop wasting time fixing the blame, we have more energy to fix the problem. When you stop hiding your own faults and hurling accusations at others, then the healing power of Christ can begin working in your mind, will and life.
Celebrate Recovery is built on the New Testament principle that we don’t get well by ourselves. We need each other. Fellowship and accountability are two important components of spiritual growth and recovery. We were not designed to do life alone and that includes recovery. You will find this fellowship and accountability at Celebrate Recovery.
